Ownership: On back, owner ca. 1800 has written: "Given me by Walsh Porter descended from Endymion Porter..." Walsh Porter identifiable as author of 'The Chimney Corner,' Drury Lane 7 October 1797? Phillipps collection Mss 26448; bought for Spencer from Sotheby's, 1972.
Content: Dated 1448-9, with Henry VI "regnans in anno xxvii;" made for Ralph Boteler, Baron Sudelely 1441-73 or his son. Ralph's daughter-in-law, Eleanor Boteler (Butler) was alleged by Richard III to have married Edward IV before he married Elizabeth Woodville.
