Description
A cover of the Milanese periodical Il mondo artistico, subtitled Giornale di musica, del teatri e belle arti. It began publication in 1867, which was denoted Anno I, and ceased in 1914. This print contains ten inset portraits of men and four of women, labeled with their surnames; among them are the composers Charles Gounod, Amilcare Ponchielli, and Giuseppe Verdi. In the center, three female ballet dancers support letters forming the journal's title. Above them is the figure of Nike, poised on a globe and surrounded by three putti, one of whom bears a banner printed with composers' names and opera titles. In the distance is a crowd apparently costumed for various operas.
