Biographical/historical: Funded by a grant from the Anne Hendricks Bass Foundation, the KDP began in 2008 when the Center for Khmer Studies partnered with the Jerome Robbins Dance Division to interview and film the three generations of artists - including dancers, musicians and singers, as well as embroiderers and dressers - who kept dance alive during and in the wake of the Khmer Rouge regime.

Venue: Recorded 12 August 2009 The French Institute, Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
Acquisition: A production of the Khmer Dance Project, initiated by the Center for Khmer Studies in partnership with the Jerome Robbins Dance Division of The New York Public Library, with a grant from the Anne Hendricks Bass Foundation.

Description
Musician Chhem Sok speaks about his family background in music; his studies in drumming; the importance of drummers knowing dance gestures in order to play for dance performances. He discusses the loss of knowledge in the younger generation; speaks about making drums; and describes performing in the orchestra in the Royal Palace. He speaks about his experiences during the Khmer Rouge era and how he came back to music after this period; he articulates his views on the future of music and dance. From 36 min. to the end of the recording, Chhem Sok demonstrates drumming.
