Notes
Content: A reception room with seven female dancers in costume and eight male visitors. Foreground (left to right): The Earl of Fife, patron of Maria Mercandotti, and Hughes Ball, her most assiduous suitor, observing the dancer. Mercandotti, wearing her costume for the title role in Albert's ballet Cendrillon (first danced in London by Mercandotti on March 12, 1823), on right pointe, left leg extended to side. Lise Noblet, weight on left foot, right foot pointe tendue, in costume for André Deshayes' ballet La paysanne supposée (premiered at the King's Theatre, April 10, 1821). Joséphine Hullin, in a costume for an unidentified ballet, full length to front, looking right, weight on left foot, right foot behind, her right arm raised above head.
Biographical/historical: The costume portraits of Mercandotti, Noblet, and Hullin are based on 1822-23 engravings by Robert Cooper. Lord Petersham stands at extreme right.
