Content: Depicts the cloister scene in Act III of Meyerbeer's opera Robert le Diable. A cemetery in a convent: left of center the dissipated Robert holds a magic branch which he hopes will give him limitless power. The specters of twenty-four nuns, whose sins during life deprived the convent of its sanctity, mill about. The women wear white Romantic tutus, black scapulars and black veils attached to the backs of their heads.
