Description
Olga Tarasova and Gabriella Taub-Darvash, both graduates of the Russian Academy of Theatrical Arts (formerly GITIS), begin by discussing the founding of the institute in 1946 by Leonid Lavrovsky, Rostislav Zakharov, and other notable choreographers. Tarasova then describes the academy's present-day curriculum, which covers practical and theoretical aspects of dance, music, and theater arts. Topics raised by questions and comments from the audience include a comparison of the training of dancers and choreographers in Russia and the U.S., the neglect of character dancing in the U.S., the relative merits of notation and videotape as methods of preserving choreography, Darvash's experiences as a choreographer in her native Romania and the U.S., an upcoming choreographers' workshop to be held by the Russian Academy in summer 1996, and Tarasova's most recent book on the art of teaching choreography.
