Notes
Statement of responsibility: M. Alophe.
Biographical/historical: Le diable amoureux, also known as The devil in love (choreography, Joseph Mazilier; music, François Benoist and Henri Reber; scenario, Jules Vernoy de Saint-Georges and Mazilier) was first presented at the Paris Opéra in 1840. The role of Urielle, created as a vehicle for Pauline Leroux, was a benevolent figure despite her infernal origins, and assisted the lovers Frédéric and Lilia. In the course of the ballet Urielle dons the disguises of a male page as well as a bride and a bayadère. This print probably depicts the pas de fascination, a high point of the ballet, in which she entices the Grand Vizier into purchasing her as a slave.
Biographical/historical: This is a colored version of a lithograph published as a plate in the Album de l'Opéra, edited and published by Augustin Challamel in Paris, ca. 1845. Like most of the other plates in the book, it accompanied an essay on the ballet it depicted.
