Notes
Content : Manuscript note written in ink on a scrap of light tan paper, probably before 1860. Verso is inaccessible because manuscript is firmly pasted down onto the larger blank leaf to which it is mounted. Along the left side of his autograph, Whitman has mounted a pasted-down clipping from an unidentified newspaper or periodical (most probably English) which explores the themes that “To struggle is not to suffer” and that “the lethargic repose of luxury too monotonous, and of security too absolute” are much worse in their “effects upon happiness than [is] any condition of alarm and peril.” In Volume I of: Walt Whitman. Holograph manuscript fragments assembled by Dr. Richard Maurice Bucke. Text published in Edward F. Grier’s edition of the Notebooks and Unpublished Prose Manuscripts (New York: New York University Press, 1984), p. 1318, with the text taken from Bucke’s Notes and Fragments.
