Notes
Content: Title from folder.
Content: Printed on border: " 'Do you want to kill the colonel?' " " 'The Contrast: A Comedy in Five Acts, by a Citizen of the United States,' Philadelphia, 1790, was written by Royall Tyler. It was the first play represented by a regular company on the American stage from the pen of an American author. A copy of this brochure which belonged to Washington, with his familiar autograph on the title-page, is included in the collection of Samuel P. Avery, of this city. The above frontispiece was engraved by Maverick from a drawing by William Dunlap. It is believed to represent a scene in the old John Street Theater, and contains portraits of Mrs. Morris as Charlotte, Lewis Halllam, Jr., as Dimple, John Henry as colonel Manly, Owen Morris as Van Rough, as Thomas Wignell as Jonathan. Editor."
