Description
These unusual soldiers are part of a unit of Belgian volunteers serving in the Imperial Mexican Army of Emperor Maximilian, the Habsburg Austrian Archduke who was installed as monarch of Mexico in the 1860’s by Napoleon III of France. Why would Belgians want to serve in Mexico? Maximilian’s Empress, Charlotte (or Carlotta), came from Belgian royalty.
