Description
Hobnailed military boots were called “caligae”. Caligula is a nickname given to the emperor when he was a child; it means “little boots”. The short, double-edged legionary sword was called a “gladius”, the origin of the word gladiator for someone who fights with a sword. Chariots weren’t used by the Roman army in battle. They were rather for triumphal processions or racing in the Circus Maximus. The gray block at the bottom of the page shows scenes of the Roman army in action (except for the chariot race at lower right). In the upper row at center right, soldiers interlock their shields to make a defensive formation called a “testudo” or turtle. At upper left a standard bearer holds the insignia of a legion. A chariot race scene appears at lower right, where you can see the “spina” or center of the race track, filled with sculpture.
