Content: Printed on border: "Frank Leslie's Illustrated family almanac for 1883." "An historic character has passed from the stage in the death of Giuseppe Garibaldi, which occurred at his island home of Caprera on the 2d of June, 1882. The son of a poor sailor, Garibaldi was born at Nice, July 4th, 1806, and took to the sea when he was but a youth. As he grew to manhood he became interested in Italian history and politics, and in 1833 he joined the secret society of which Mazzini was the leader. In the following year he compromised himself by taking part in a futile revolutionary outbreak at Genoa, and had to flee from the city disguised as a peasant. He next made his appearance in South America, and when the republic of Rio Grande declared its independence of Brazil, he went to the aid of the struggling province. He fought bravely on sea and land with a band of his countrymen, was wounded, captured by the Brazilians, imprisoned and subjected to torture. In 1843 he became chief of the naval forces of the Republicans of Montevideo, consisting of three miserable sloops, and had to fight the squadron of Dictator Rosas under Admiral Brown. Garibaldi had married then a Creole of the province of Sainte Catherine, …"
