NotesContent: The definitive photographic study of the bronze gates of Balawat.Content: A unique copy compiled by Wilberforce Eames, containing the annotated page proofs of Birch's unpublished introduction; together with an original ink drawing of the Bronze Gates by T.G. Pinches.Content: Samuel Birch originally wrote a 25 page introduction to, and description of, the photographs, only 4 pages of which were ever printed. When the fifth fascicle of this work was finally published in 1902, 7 years after Samuel Birch's death, it appeared with a revised description of the photographs and 3 pages of new introduction by Walter de Gray Birch.Content: Wilberforce Eames purchased a bound copy of this work from Quaritch, containing the fascicles and the front wrapper to volume 1. Through diligent correspondence, he was able to find the covers to the remaining fascicles as well as 3 of the temporary printed leaflets to fascicles 1, 2, and 4. More significantly, he discovered the proofs for Samuel Birch's unpublished introduction and description containing pencilled corrections on the margins of nearly every page as well as an original drawing of the Bronze Gates by T.G. Pinches. Eames bound all the material together in a new volume, and attached a typewritten statement of his achievement to the front free endpaper. This volume is signed "W. Eames" in the upper right hand corner of the front free endpaper.
