"Beethoven Society. Music"--printed on mount.
Description
Letterpress design on mount: a float bearing a bust of Beethoven surrounded by allegorical figures and two standards labeled, respectively, "Simphon" and "Fidilio". This was Float no. 33, titled "Symphonic Music", one of 60 floats contributed by the New York German-American community to the "Civic and Industrial Parade" that took place on the final day of the Washington Inauguration Centennial celebration in New York in 1889. It was accompanied by the Beethoven Maennerchor, a local singing society; those riding on it may have included the woman in the photograph, posed as an allegory of music.
