Content: This animal is now known as the star-nosed mole, and goes by the scientific name of "Condylura cristata". The Latin name "Sorex Cristatus" under the illustration was assigned by the naturalist Linnaeus, and implies that he originally considered the creature to be a kind of shrew. The illustration by Thomas Bewick, for all its small size, conveys a fine sense of the animal's velvety fur.
