Notes
Content: Printed on border: "According to the conception of this artist, three destinies prevail over human life - the Present, the Past, and the Future. The idea is analogous to that of the old Greeks who invented the fiction of the Three Fates: Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos - one holding the distaff, the second drawing the thread of life, and the third cutting it with the shears of death. The German concept has departed by much from the original, and yet preserves its outlines. Here the Present, impersonated in the central figure, rises sublimely over the Past and the Future." Includes additional text.
