Notes
Content: Printed on mount: "World photographer Wm. Werneke snapped this 'shot' seconds after James J. Gallagher pumped bullets into Mayor Wm. J. Gaynor (of New York) neck on deck of S.S. Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse, (North German Lloyd Line) Pier 2, Hoboken, N.J. Aug. 9, 1910. One of the finest news pictures ever made. See "The Mayor Who Mastered New York" by Lately Thomas, a biographer of Gaynor, (Wm. Morrow & Co., N.Y.C, 1969) pp. 290-295. Gaynor was taken to St. Mary Hospital, Hoboken, N.J., where after several weeks he recovered. He had been running a front running presidential possibility in 1910 but refused to run for governor. Wilson picked up all the Gaynor support, and went on to win nomination at Baltimore and the election in 1912. Photo (and notes) gift of J. Owen Grundy, Nov. 1981."
