Notes
Content: Pharaoh stands in his chariot at center and looses arrows at his enemies. He wears the helmet-like blue war crown. He would actually be driven by a charioteer into battle, but is shown here with the reins looped around his waist.
Content: Pharaoh's enemies are "Asiatics", the Egyptian term for peoples of the Middle East. They are shown dying and full of arrows among their wrecked chariots beneath the Pharaoh's hooves and wheels. Unlike the Egyptian two-man chariots, the Asiatic chariots (also visible on the bands above and below the main scene) have a three-man crew of driver, shield-bearer and warrior.
Source note: Monuments de l''Egypte et de la Nubie, d''àprès les dessins exécutés sur les lieux sous la direction de Champollion-le-jeune. (Paris : Didot, 1844-1889) Guizot, M. , Publisher. Thiers, M. , Publisher. Champollion, Jean François (1790-1832), Author.
