Biographical/historical: Le Charivari, an illustrated newspaper, was published in Paris from 1833 to 1937. Though its original aim was political commentary, it turned to more generalized satire after an official ban on political caricature. The illustrators Cham (the pseudonym of Charles Amédée de Noé) and Charles Vernier were frequent contributors.
Biographical/historical: La Périchole was a comedy with songs, written by Emmanuel Théaulon and Alfred de Forges, and first presented at the Théâtre du Palais-Royal, Paris, in 1835.

Description
Serious art, comic art, and caricatures from the French satirical journal Le Charivari. Some depict theatrical or social dancers; others utilize the images of people dressed as dancers for comic or satirical effect. Many of the sheets in this collection have been trimmed and lack dates. The collection is arranged in two groups: a general section, and a section for the images from the series Actualités.
