DescriptionCostume design for Thetis, variously described in ancient Greek mythology as a sea nymph or goddess, and one of fifty Nereids. She is perhaps best known as the mother of Achilles, the hero of Homer's Iliad. Her costume in this print is replete with marine details, including fishes' scales, scallop shells, pearls, and the suggestion of seaweed in her headdress. The object she holds in her right hand appears to be a mirror, perhaps a reference to her ability to change her shape, which she employed in vain when captured by Peleus, who became the father of Achilles.
