In 1871, he became the first president of Alcorn College, a black school in Claiborne County, Mississippi, serving from 1871-1873, and again from 1876-1882. Revels and his wife, Pheobe, had six daughters including Suzie, who later married journalist Horace Roscoe Cayton.
