Notes
Content: First edition of the Spanish translation, made from the original Dutch edition of 1678 (q.v.) This Spanish versionis the source of the English translation first printed in 1684 (q.v.) and of the French translation first printed in1686 (q.v.) The authors of these translations at second-hand were unfamiliar with the Dutch original and made rather free use of the Spanish version, "incorporating into their respective versions considerable additional matter, chiefly to bring into prominence the special merits of their compatriots, e.g. the French version embodying many exploits of the French filibusters not referred to by the Dutch author, while the English editionmakes Morgan the principal hero of the sotry."--H. Powell, introd. to ed. of 1894.
