Caption title.
Biographical/historical: Among Walter Toscanini's collection of Italian ballet libretti is a scenario for Giovanni Fabbri's ballet Oreste, as presented at the Gran Teatro Comunale in Bologna, Italy, in autumn 1838. This print apparently commemorates an earlier performance, during Carnival season, 1838, at the Teatro di Apollo in Rome. The five dancers in the print also performed in Bologna. Carlo Gagliani played Egisto [Aegisthus], king of Argo; Francesca Pezzoli, Clitennestra [Clytemnestra]; Prospero Diani, Oreste [Orestes]; Carolina Scannagatti, Elettra [Electra]; and Giacomo Rossi, Pilade [Pylades], the friend of Oreste. The story of Orestes originated in ancient Greek mythology and inspired plays by Euripides and Aeschylus. Orestes and his sister Electra, the children of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra, avenged their father's murder by Clytemnestra and her lover Aegisthus by slaying them in turn.
