Description
Image depicts an underground cave scene from the opera La Venere gelosa, or Jealous Venus, performed in 1643 at the Teatro novissimo in Venice. A club wielding Centaur gestures toward 6 men in armour and plumed hats. Along the side of the cave another man rides a chariot borne on clouds, propelled by giant serpents. The back, top portion of the cave opens up, revealing a landscape scene, lending perspective and depicting the world above ground.
