Content : General Werner von Fritsch, though loyal to the Reich and once Commander-in-Chief of the German Army, had had a troubled relationship with the Führer and his policies, eventually being forced to retire after a manufactured scandal. Recalled to service when the war started, he was fatally shot in Poland while visiting the front near Warsaw. Goering was the only major Nazi functionary to attend his funeral.
