To relieve the front at Tobruk and Malta the British in mid-June sent a heavily armed naval convoy from Gibraltar and a second one from Alexandria. The convoy coming from Gibraltar was attacked by the Italian air force. In doing so torpedo planes succeeded in sinking 3 cruisers, 3 destroyers, plus 3 cargo steamships. 1 battleship, 1 aircraft carrier and 2 cruisers were badly damaged. The picture shows the moment after the release of the torpedo in front of a British battleship.

Content : The Malta convoy battles were some of the most fiercely fought naval engagements of the war, as the Italian and German air forces repeatedly attacked British ships bringing supplies to the besieged island. Here, a tri-motor SM-79 bomber launches its torpedo at a World War I vintage British battleship. Note the wakes from other ships in the convoy crossing the picture.
