Note that following the MinEvent performance, the visuals do not match the audio track. We see footage of various students at The Wooden Floor dancing, then footage of the onstage Q&A event for which we hear the audio, but the visual and audio elements are not at all in sync. While the file running time is listed at 42 minutes, audio ends at 37:16, though video of the Q&A continues silently until the end of the file.
Description
A Merce Cunningham Dance Company MinEvent performed as a one-time-only, site-specific piece at The Wooden Floor, a youth arts organization in Santa Ana, California. The piece is performed by teenage members of The Wooden Floor dance corps. Following the conclusion of the piece (22:26), the young dancers participate in an audience Q&A. The first questioner inquires what the teens have learned from studying and performing Cunningham's choreographic method. The students are then asked how Cunningham choreography fits into and extends their larger dance training at The Wooden Floor (24:30). Another audience member asks them to describe how Cunningham choreography feels physically, "in the body" (26:33). They are then asked if experiencing Cunningham movement has altered the way in which they interact with the "natural world" (28:46). The next question asks how the dancers respond to and work with the frequent abstraction present in the choreographer's work (30:42). The panel concludes with a discussion of the rehearsal process for the performance (36:32).
