NotesTitle devised by cataloger.Acquisition: Gift; Estate of Josephine Butler.Biographical/historical: Tom & Jerry sporting a toe was published as part of Pierce Egan's Life in London: or, The day and night scenes of Jerry Hawthorne, esq., and his elegant friend Corinthian Tom, accompanied by Bob Logic, the Oxonian, in their rambles and sprees through the metropolis. La promenade was originally issued as part of a set of four titled The dancing lesson by G. Humphrey in 1822-1825. The original publisher's name and address was erased and replaced by that of McLean. Breaking up was originally issued as part of a set of four titled Holiday scenes by S. Knight, 1826. The original publisher's name and address was erased and replaced by that of McLean.

DescriptionRepresentations of ballroom dancing in England between 1817 and 1826, captured in etchings by the brothers George Cruikshank and Robert (who signed his prints I.R. for Isaac Robert) Cruikshank. With the exception of the print titled Breaking up, the images are presented with minor exaggeration of physical features, expressions, or positions. In Breaking up, which depicts a children's dance, a number of the participants (both adults and children) are caricatures, among them the dancing master with his fiddle.
