Biographical/historical: Johann Esaias Nilson, who was born and died in Augsburg, was a German miniature painter, draughtsman, engraver, and print publisher. Trained in part by his parents, who were also miniature painters, he worked as a court painter, producing portraits of the nobility. He founded a printing house in 1751 and published the designs and engravings of other artists, as well as his own.

Extent: 1 print : engraving, b&w ; 31 x 22 cm., plate mark 28 x 19 cm.
Description
Two vignettes on one sheet. At top within a circular frame, a woman and man, both holding masks, cast fond glances at each another. Various figures surround them outside the frame; among them are a man in a peaked hat, partly concealed by shadows; a masked dwarf; a man with an agitated child; and a masked woman in peasant dress, who reaches towards a bottle. The image below depicts a woman and man who seem to be wearing fancy dress; her skirt, adorned with stars and an owl with outspread wings, reaches only to her calves, and the man's knee-breeches are decorated with the astrological symbols for Cancer and Capricorn. The woman wears what appears to be a crescent moon atop her head; the man wears a rayed sun. Neither, however, is masked. The man's right leg is raised in a dancing or running position.
