Description
Documentary on the role of music and dance in the culture of the Waiapi Indians in the Amazon River region of Brazil. The commentary, written by anthropologist Victor Fuks, explores how the Waiapi Indians' music and dance festivals reflect their relationships to mythology, nature, and society. Although the descriptions focus on the music, the musicians can be seen dancing as they play. The festivals depicted are an enactment of the Warikena (a monster) myth, and celebrations of various animals, including the mangangan (bumblebee), suiriri bird, pakuku (frog) and jacare (alligator), and several types of fish.
