Description
Illustration of a fable by Aesop. At the court of an Egyptian king, apes have been taught to dance. Dressed in costume, with crowns on their heads and sceptres in their hands, they are performing a masque for the delectation of the courtiers when a man throws nuts among them, causing them to revert to their true nature as they scramble for the treat. In this print, some of the apes are still in dance formation; musicians accompany them from a dais in the background. The audience of courtiers, with a turbaned man who may be the king at center, is assembled in the foreground.
