Abstract

In 1901 businessman and art collector Charles Stewart Smith (1832-1909) donated a group of 1,763 Japanese woodcuts to the New York Public Library’s Print Collection, which were purchased while traveling to Japan on his honeymoon in 1892. The collection focuses on prints of the ukiyo-e school and were assembled by the English military man, journalist, and author, Frank Brinkley. Among these color woodcuts is a celebrated group of prints by Kitagawa Utamaro, as well as examples of the work of Harunobu, Koryusai, Sharaku, and Hokusai.
