Abstract

Saint-Léger was the Provost of the Special Court Provostale investigating the slave uprising in Martinique in February of 1831. The collection consists of sixty-five manuscripts relating to the rebellion including correspondence from the Governor of Martinique, French settlers, and police precincts on the island; register of official correspondence of St. Léger, the "Prévôt" (Magistrate), 1831; police reports; warrants issued by St. Léger for fugitive slaves suspected of arson and poisoning; court records related to the burning of the Ducasse, Lamentin, and Grande Case plantations; and biographical notes of St. Léger, dated 1913.
