Biographical/historical: The full-page color illustration mounted on the cover depicts a soldier carrying a stack of books. The image originated as a poster commissioned by the Library War Service of the American Library Association, with lettering "Books wanted for our men in camp and 'over there.' Take your gifts to the public library." It was also used as a bookplate by the Library War Service.
