Biographical/historical: CARE, the international relief organization, was formally organized in November 1945. Originally, the acronym CARE stood for the Cooperative for American Remittances to Europe. In 1953, as CARE expanded its services to other continents, it became the Cooperative for American Remittances to Everywhere, and in 1959, after CARE had shifted into other types of relief work besides food distribution, it changed to its present name, the Cooperative for American Relief Everywhere.
