Gertrude Stein (1874-1946) was an American poet, novelist, and essayist. Stein named her friend, the writer and photographer Carl Van Vechten, as her literary executor. Among other acts, he helped to usher into print works of hers that remained unpublished at the time of her death. These photographs of Stein and associates are among a gift from Van Vechten of nearly 5,000 photographs taken by him and presented to NYPL over the years (these additional photographs reside in several departments, allocated by subject: the Berg Collection and the Manuscripts and Archives Division in the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building; the Billy Rose Theatre Collection and the Jerome Robbins Dance Division in the Library for the Performing Arts; and the Photographs and Prints Division of the Schomburg Center.)
