Content: Collection contains work by A. Tennyson Beals, Richard A. Martin, and Nichols, among others.
Content: Collection depicts health and medical care activities and facilities servicing African Americans, mainly in New YorkCity, from 1861 to the 1970s with the bulk of the images dating from the 1920s to the 1950s.
Content: Some photographs bear photographer's or photography studio's handstamp on verso. Some items bear handwritten captions on recto and verso. Some photographs are accompanied by press releases. Some items are cropped.
Content: The collection consists of exterior and interior views of hospitals including a series of images of Harlem Hospital, New York, N.Y., (1929) showing its exterior, wards and operating room as well as formal group portraits of some of its medical staff. Another series shows staff and patients engaged in narcotic rehabilitation activities at Riverside Hospital (1950s).
