Biographical/historical: John Gisborne, friend of Percy Bysshe and Mary Shelley. Gisborne was trained as a merchant in his youth, and in 1800 he married Maria Reveley, a friend of William Godwin's. The Gisbornes moved to Italy in 1801 and became important friends of the Shelleys in 1818 when the young couple visited them at their Leghorn home. In 1821, John and Maria returned to England, eventually retiring in Plymouth.
