Movie Houses of the Outer Boroughs: Past Glory and Adaptive Reuse, 1998-2001; a portfolio

Collection Data

Description
New York-based photographer Larry Racioppo's series on former movie theaters in New York City's outer boroughs, taken from 1998 through 2001. Some theaters are seen in a state of abandonment and disrepair, while others have been repurposed and converted into retail spaces or houses of worship. Since completion of the series several theaters have been demolished, including the Savoy Theatre in Brooklyn and the McKinley Square Theatre in the Bronx. The Kings Theatre in Flatbush, Brooklyn, by contrast, seen here in a state of neglect, has since been renovated and restored to its former opulence. Throughout his career Racioppo has photographed the changing New York City landscape, often focusing on abandoned or derelict locations. He served as photographer for NYC's Department of Housing Preservation and Development from 1989 to 2011.
