Biographical/historical: The New York State Office of the Comptroller was established in 1797. In 1927 the office was changed to the Dept. of Audit and Control, with the Comptroller at its head.
Content: The collection consists of correspondence and documents concerning the financial administration of New York State canals. Correspondence, mainly incoming, is from canal commissioners, toll collectors, and other canal administrators. Topics include toll payments and delinquencies, repair and improvement projects, and other financial matters, Also, a few documents providing statistics for canal traffic and water levels.
