Notes
Content: An interesting feature of the preface is that it refers to America "En potes iam ab Indis incipere, aliis populis, quos in oceano occidentali Hispani superioribus annis invenere" -- "Look: you can now begin [converting to Catholicism] the Indians, with other peoples whom the Spanish discovered in the Western Ocean" (trans. N.G. Wilson).
Content: Colophon: Venetiis, in aedib. Aldi, et Andreae Soceri, mense Septembri. M. D. XIII.
Statement of responsibility: Edited by Marcus Musurus and Aldus Manutius.
That is: "...[A]lthough it is reasonable that sleep should creep up in the course of a big job -- our task is not for a single day but for many years and 'there is no rest or respite' in the meantime -- I feel so upset that I would redeem each error, if I could, with a gold coin (trans. N.G. Wilson).
