Description
Interview with Hanya Holm conducted by Theodora Wiesner on November 16, 1977, at Holm's home in New York (N.Y.) for the oral history archives of the National Dance Association of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance. Streaming audio file 1 (approximately 31 minutes). Hanya Holm speaks with Theodora Wiesner about her teaching career in the United States beginning with the school created under the auspices of Sol Hurok; performing lecture-demonstrations on the so-called gymnasium circuit; the Bennington College Summer School of the Dance; teaching at Colorado College; the students; her work in musical comedies; [ends abruptly but continues on streaming audio file 2]. Hanya Holm continues to speak about her work in musical comedy; her work in opera and on the film, The vagabond king (1956); the problem with too much emphasis on technique; the principles behind her teaching and what she looks for in her students.
