Quadrille (Dance)
Ballroom dancing -- 19th century
Biographical/historical: This print reverses the image seen in a unsigned print of the same title, published in London by J. Sidebotham in 1817, and held by the British Museum. It differs somewhat in style, details, and coloration from the British Museum example. The original image may have been the work of Robert Cruikshank; he and his brother George Cruikshank produced several cartoons satirizing the quadrille, a ballroom dance popular in the nineteenth century. The signature I.R. Cruikshank, used by Robert Cruikshank, appears on Quadrilles-- practising for fear of accidents, a print stylistically similar to this one.
Biographical/historical: A print of this title, published by McCleary, is listed in A.S.W. Rosenbach's A catalogue of the works illustrated by George Cruikshank and Isaac and Robert Cruikshank in the library of Harry Elkins Widener, published by Harvard University in 1918.
