Sound quality ranges from poor to very good due to variations in volume. Eugene Loring's voice is easily intelligible overall, but the volume of Olga Maynard's voice is low, and the questions from the audience are almost completely unintelligible.
Description
Streaming audio file 1, May 15, 1973 (approximately 33 minutes). Olga Maynard introduces Eugene Loring and gives a brief biography of him, including his eventual move to California, where he is now the head of the Dance Department at UCI [University of California, Irvine]. Eugene Loring tells an anecdote about Tallulah Bankhead; speaks about how this series of lectures came about; and his childhood, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin including anecdotes about his family, himself, and others [ends abruptly in the middle of an anecdote]. Streaming audio file 2, May 15, 1973 (approximately 33 minutes). [Begins abruptly.] Eugene Loring tells anecdotes about Carl Sandburg and Tallulah Bankhead; opening a studio with Michael Kidd; his ballet Billy the Kid including a performance anecdote; he introduces a film of the ballet before screening it [music, and voice-over commentary from soundtrack of film; ends abruptly]. [Begins abruptly.] Eugene Loring tells anecdotes about productions at the Ogunquit Playhouse (in Maine); his time as a dancer with the American Ballet Company [which performed under the name American Ballet Ensemble] in Metropolitan Opera productions, including stories about George Balanchine; his work on the [1945] film Yolanda and the thief including a story about Fred Astaire [ends abruptly in the middle of an anecdote about Lucille Bremer]. [Applause.] Eugene Loring tells a performance anecdote from his time at the Metropolitan Opera Company; performing with Ballet Theatre [now American Ballet Theatre] including anecdotes about Adolph Bolm and Bolm's ballet Peter and the wolf; changes in management at Ballet Theatre that led to his leaving the company; being commissioned in 1942 to produce a season of his ballets; his move to Hollywood, California to work for MGM [Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer]; working on [the musical] Carmen Jones with Billy Rose; names some of the other projects on which he worked in the 1940s and tells an anecdote about Lucille Ball; the film Fiesta; founding the American School of Dance [in Hollywood, California] in 1947; projects on which he worked in the 1950s, in particular the 1953 film The 5,000 fingers of Dr. T [screens the "dungeon scene" from the film; ends abruptly].
