Notes

Biographical/Historical: Marie Taglioni is often said to have ushered in the Romantic era of ballet with her portrayal of the ethereal Sylphide in her father Filippo's ballet La sylphide (1832). Her dancing made weightlessness and ineffable grace the hallmarks of the ballerina, and created a fad for supernatural female creatures in ballet.
Acquisition: Gift; Lillian Moore.
Content: A full-page illustration from the Illustrated London News surrounds a portrayal of nineteenth-century ballerina Marie Taglioni as the Sylphide with smaller figures of other dancers, putti, lyres and other musical instruments, and a trio of Grecian ladies, probably the Graces.
Content: Title derived from facsimile signature; accompanying article on the verso.
