Abstract

Interview with Gwen Verdon on the history of dance (Part 1) on Broadway conducted by Dick Cavett on the WNET television series, the Dick Cavett Show; telecast on December 5, 1977. This is the audio portion of the telecast. Several brief film clips are shown, and Verdon demonstrates steps; during these interludes, recorded music can be heard. Streaming audio file (approximately 21 minutes). [Begins abruptly. The recording includes brief film clips and demonstrations by Gwen Verdon; during these interludes recorded music can be heard.] Gwen Verdon speaks with Dick Cavett about her career as a dancer including her childhood training to correct congenital rickets; dancing with Jack Cole; his influence on American jazz dancing on Broadway; Agnes de Mille's use of ballet in Broadway musicals; dance routines before Cole and De Mille; De Mille's combining of ballet and tap dancing; other Broadway choreographers including Alvin Ailey and Ron [Ronald] Field; the influence of modern dance on Broadway musicals; other influences including burlesque; Michael Kidd; Dick Cavett's tap dance training.
