Content: For a long time it has been thought that the manuscript map was commissioned for the Virginia Company, and it is therefore known as the "Virginia Company Chart." Though this is a fair assumption, no documentation exists to support it: the Virginia Company's records, covering the years 1605-1616, are presumed to have been destroyed in the great fire of London in 1666.
