Description
Mary Hinkson, formerly a member of the Martha Graham Dance Company, and Margaret Selby, who produced the Dance in America program Two by Dove, trace Ulysses Dove's career as dancer and choreographer. They recall his early performances with Merce Cunningham's dance company, and note the strong influence that Cunningham had upon him, especially in his use of music. They discuss some significant events in his life, including his move to Alvin Ailey's company, his work in France with the Groupe de Recherche Chorégraphique de l'Opéra de Paris, and his creation of Dancing on the front porch of heaven for the Royal Swedish Ballet. Hinkson and Selby emphasize his belief in the necessity of finding one's own artistic voice, and pay tribute to his passionate love of dance and his unselfish compulsion to choreograph, without using choreography as a means to aggrandize himself as a performer.
