Physical Description

Extent: 1 audiocassette (approximately 1 hr.) : quarter-track; 1.875 ips
Sound quality is fair to very poor. The recording is marred by extraneous noise, the volume fluctuates, and the final approximate 15 minutes of the recording is almost completely unintelligible.

Abstract

Streaming audio file 1 (approximately 47 minutes) and streaming audio file 2 (approximately 12 minutes). Nora Kaye, with occasional remarks from Herbert Ross, speaks with Walter Terry about the [1977] film The turning point including how the idea for the film evolved; the recruiting of Arthur Laurents to write the script; the typically inadequate portrayal of dance on film; the lighting; her goal of showing the dedication of dancers to their art; the characters, plot, and themes of the film including her own decision to retire from performing; the actors including Anne Bancroft, Shirley MacLaine, Mikhail Baryshnikov, and Antoinette Sibley; her thoughts on the film The red shoes [beginning at approximately 36 minutes, the sound quality becomes progressively worse].
