Abstract
Victorious Roman soldiers pillage a captured city. In the center, women beg the Roman general for mercy, holding a child and clinging to the victor's foot. Soldiers behind the general carry the standards of their army. In the background at right, soldiers pull down a statue of a goddess seated on a lion. In the left foreground are captives who will be sold into slavery, the men with bound hands and the women weeping. Piled near them are plundered treasures, including pottery and metal vessels, a mirror, and a statue. In the foreground, a child finds his dead father and grieving mother, while nearby a dog howls over his fallen master. Other soldiers carry away captives and sacks of loot. The soldiers at far right have found a goblet.
